I am glad you are here!

I am a Bioinformatician & Data Scientist at the University of Vermont, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. My research focuses on collaborative bioinformatics and computational biology, spanning variant analysis, epigenomics, virus typing, transcriptomics, and structural biology. I work extensively with workflow management systems, containerized environments, and high-performance computing to enforce reproducibility and scalability.

I have been integrating quantitative sciences and computational methods with biomedical research since 2001, with a focus on Bayesian statistical methods, machine learning, data science and now, increasingly, AI methods. Learn more about my work in projects and publications.

A bit longer…

I grew up in Costa Rica in a family of life scientists, and by the way, when I was a teenager I swore never to have anything to do with biology or get a Ph.D – my aspirations leaned more towards becoming a ninja…but alas…decades later with a PhD in bioinformatics!

During my first semester of Computer Science at the University of Costa Rica I had a classmate/friend that was studying pure mathematics. Something about the way he thought and his approach to solving problems really intrigued me. I took a class and the fascinating world of math proved to be a welcome challenge so I decided to also study math (my family was also much more supportive of that than of me becoming a ninja!). I had no idea that studying math would later open a world of possibilities.

After graduating I took a break from school and came to Vermont to live at a Zen Buddhist Center, where I also had my very first and very cold Vermont winter! Eventually I met Dr. Jeff Bond, a University of Vermont researcher and professor, whom I worked with for 5 years as a bioinformatics programmer and afterwards he was my advisor for the Ph.D. program in Cell and Molecular Biology doing Computational Biology/Bioinformatics.

During my second year of the Ph.D program, something unexpected happen: another graduate student and myself took a visiting professor (Terry Speed, a world-renowned bioinformatics statistician) to Vermont’s famous ice cream factory: Ben and Jerry’s. During the trip, something about the conversation, and also listening to his talks, really aroused my interest in statistics, subsequently I took a Bayesian statistics course and I was hooked! Been a statistician/bioinformatician/data scientist ever since working for both academia and industry.

I also have a life outside of work, mainly about finding the meaning of life and becoming a better person, and also as a hobby singing and playing percussion in a band, but that’s a story for another time!!
